As the summer heat rises, Ayurveda reminds us to slow down, stay hydrated, and choose foods and drinks that help cool the body and calm excess Pitta energy.

Pitta is associated with heat, fire, and intensity, so during hot weather we may notice signs of imbalance such as irritability, inflammation, overheating, skin sensitivity, or digestive discomfort. Ayurveda recommends favouring cooling herbs, fresh water-rich foods, rest, and gentle routines during these warmer months.

One of my favourite summer remedies is a simple homemade lemonade that is both refreshing and deeply hydrating.

Cooling Mint Lemonade Recipe
1 full unwaxed lemon chopped and deseeded
2-3 tablespoons of honey
A handful of fresh mint leaves
A pinch of Maldon salt
1 litre of Filtered water

Blend the whole lemon with water, mint, honey, and a small pinch of salt, then strain if desired.

This drink helps replenish minerals and supports hydration naturally. The addition of salt can help the body absorb water more effectively, while mint is traditionally known in Ayurveda for its cooling and soothing qualities.

A gentle reminder though — while lemon can be refreshing in moderation, excessive sour foods may aggravate Pitta for some people, especially during very hot weather. Listen to your body and adjust according to what feels balancing and nourishing for you.

Wishing you a calm, hydrated, and peaceful summer season.
