When Summer Doesn’t Feel Slow: An Invitation to Do Less and Feel More
Summer often arrives with a promise: long, light-filled days, time to rest, space to reset. But for many of us—especially those who give their time and energy so generously to others—summer can feel just as full as the rest of the year.
If you’re a parent juggling school holidays, someone managing a busy workload, or simply a person who tends to prioritise others’ needs over your own, summer can easily become another season of doing.
And when that happens, the joy and spaciousness we’re meant to feel gets replaced by exhaustion, dehydration, and a quiet question in the background:
When do I get to rest?
The Gentle Wisdom of Doing Less
As a yoga teacher and Ayurvedic practitioner, I often return to this truth: balance isn’t found by pushing harder. It’s found by softening. By doing less, not more.
Ayurveda teaches us to live in rhythm with the seasons. Summer is governed by pitta dosha—hot, sharp, intense, and bright. When we’re already busy or burned out, this heat can tip us into irritability, overwhelm, or even physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue, or digestive issues.
The antidote? Cooling, calming, slowing down. Not in big, life-changing ways, but in small, achievable moments that help you come back to yourself.
Here are a few simple ways to reclaim a sense of ease and nourishment this summer:
1. Hydrate With Intention
It sounds obvious, but many of us are more dehydrated than we realise—especially in summer. Ayurveda suggests avoiding ice-cold drinks, which can dampen digestion and create more internal stress.
Try sipping water throughout the day at room temperature. Add a squeeze of lime or a few cucumber slices to make it more refreshing and hydrating. Coconut water or a light herbal tea like mint or fennel can also support cooling from the inside out.
Even just taking five minutes to sit, breathe, and sip slowly can feel like an act of deep care.
2. Rest Without Needing a Reason
This is your permission slip: You don’t need to earn your rest.
You don’t need to check off the whole to-do list before you can take a break.
You are already worthy of pause, right now.
Try lying down in a quiet room for 10 minutes with your legs up the wall. Sit in the shade and close your eyes. Let your breath slow without needing to change anything. These tiny windows of stillness help regulate your nervous system and soothe pitta energy.
3. Move in a Way That Cools You
If you’re practising yoga, choose gentle, grounding movements over fiery flows. Forward folds, gentle twists, and restorative poses can help release heat and tension. If you don’t have time for a full practice, even a few stretches or a short walk in nature can shift your state.
Think ease over effort, cool over push.
4. Do One Less Thing
Just one.
Say no to one request.
Skip one task that truly can wait.
Let the dishes sit for a little longer, and use that time to step outside, breathe, or rest your eyes.
Every time you choose rest over more doing, you’re rebalancing the scales. You’re reminding your body and mind that you deserve care too.
Coming Back to Joy
This summer, I invite you to do less—not to check out, but to tune in. To make space not just for stillness, but for joy.
Joy doesn’t always come in big, dramatic moments. It comes in the small pauses. The breath between the noise. The moment you choose yourself, gently, without guilt.
You don’t have to earn it. You’re allowed to have it—now.
A Moment for You: Journaling Prompt
Take a quiet moment—just for you. Find a pen, a notebook, and a bit of space.
Ask yourself:
What would it feel like to do less today?
What could I let go of—just for now—that would bring me more ease, more softness, more joy?
You don’t need to come up with the perfect answer. Just notice what rises. Let it be honest. Let it be yours.
